Tatar Dictionary by a Fulbright Alum Joined the Oxford Global Languages Initiative

31 January 2018 Tatar has joined a growing number of languages from around the globe as part of Oxford Dictionaries’ global languages initiative. The dictionary is based on the "English-Tatar Dictionary for Students", published in 2014 by a Fulbright alum for Gulshat Safiullina. Gulshat, who is Associate Professor of the Institute of Philology and Intercultural Communication named after Leo Tolstoy of Kazan Federal University, participated in the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program at University of Indiana in Bloomington, USA, in 2016-2017.

“I have a dream that every Tatar child living in Tatarstan, Russian Federation or foreign countries could speak Tatar, Russian, and English languages fluently and perfectly! The dictionary should introduce Tatar culture and language to the whole world. A lot of people would like to study Tatar, hence the underlined necessity of such a dictionary,” – Gulshat explained in Oxford University Press’s press release.

Currently the online dictionary has about 25 thousand translations in the English-Tatar version and about 5 thousand words in the Tatar-English version.
